  13.                             FEATURES OF RETAIL PLUS

  15. If you have been looking at sales and inventory software you have probably
  16. voiced some of the following concerns:
  17.  
  18.   - Why is it so complicated?

  20.   - Why does it take so many steps to create a simple invoice?

  22. The goal of retail management software should be to help you concentrate on
  23. your sales and your customers. Retail Plus serves that goal. It is designed
  24. for those who spend too much time making up purchase orders, counting stock,
  25. tracking sales, or preparing invoices. It is more than an inventory system with
  26. a point-of-sale screen. It is an organizer, an analyzer and a time saver.
  27. Retail Plus has the following features:

  62. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  64. > Any MS-DOS / Windows microcomputer or microcomputer network.

  66. > A hard disk drive with at least 4MB of free space.

  68. > 640 KB of conventional memory.

  70. > A printer capable of compressed print (15 cpi), or a wide carriage printer
  71.   (132 columns). For printing barcode labels you will need an HP LaserJet or
  72.   work-alike printer.

  74. > Optional Accessories - a POS printer for sales slips, an automatic cash
  75.   drawer, a barcode wand, and a credit card reader.

  78.                      QUICKSTART INSTALLATION OF RETAIL PLUS
  79.  
  80. If you have been running a previous version of Retail Plus clear the Itemized
  81. Sales Log and the POS Exit Totals before upgrading to this version.
  82.  
  83. Retail Plus version 5.6 is supplied as an archive file called "PLUS56.EXE".
  84. It contains all the files you need. Follow these steps to get a functioning
  85. system onto your hard drive:
  86.  
  87. 1 - At the DOS prompt create a new directory on your hard drive or server and
  88. go to that directory:
  89.  
  90.                      MD RETAIL              <press enter>
  91.                      CD\RETAIL              <press enter>
  92.  
  93. 2 - Unpack the contents of PLUS56.EXE into the new directory:
  94.  
  95.                      PLUS56                 <press enter>
  96.  
  97. 3 - Now check for a file called "CONFIG.SYS" in the root directory of the
  98. C: drive of your workstation. If it is there it should contain the following
  99. statements with the at least minimum values shown (they can be greater but not
  100. smaller):
  101.                      FILES = 99
  102.                      BUFFERS = 10
  103.                      INSTALL = C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /F:4096 /L:50

  105. You can check the contents of CONFIG.SYS just by typing:
  106.  
  107.                      TYPE CONFIG.SYS        <press enter>
  108.  
  109. If the above statements are absent you can use any text editor to insert them.
  110.  
  111. The FILES statement determines how many files you can have open at once, the
  112. BUFFERS statement determines how much memory is allocated to file buffers and
  113. SHARE installs file and record locking capabilities on your computer. SHARE is
  114. required because Retail Plus is multi-user capable, whether or not you take
  115. advantage of that capability. You may already be using SHARE, and Windows 3.11
  116. or Windows 95 load it automatically. If you run Retail Plus 5.6 under Windows
  117. you can load it twice and have two different screens open at once, such as the
  118. POS screen and the New Item screen. This will not work with any program that is
  119. not multiuser or on any computer with less than 8 MB of random access memory.

  122. INSTALLING RETAIL PLUS ON A NETWORK
  123.  
  124. You can ignore this page if you are not installing Retail Plus on a network.
  125.  
  126. Retail Plus 5.6 can be installed on a LAN server such as Novell Netware or on a
  127. peer-to-peer network such as Lantastic, PowerLAN, Netware Lite, or Windows For
  128. Workgroups. Getting the file and directory priviledges set up is important.
  129. Since the program routinely creates, updates and deletes index files, each user
  130. must be able to do the following: read, write, create, erase, modify, and file
  131. scan (list directory). This does not mean you must give them direct access to
  132. the Retail Plus directory where they may do some damage. The goal is to give
  133. all users the required rights, but allow them to exercise those rights only
  134. through Retail Plus so that their activities are effectively restricted.

  136. If you are using Windows 95 as the network system check to see that the drive
  137. mappings are configured correctly otherwise every computer may try to set up
  138. it's own inventory data files rather than working with the same one.

  141. NETWORK PRINTING
  142.  
  143. If your users are printing directly to a port on their own workstations you
  144. should allow Retail Plus to check that the printer is ready before each print
  145. job. To do this, go to the Utility menu and choose the Get Info command. Enter
  146. a Y in the first field to enable printer checking. Leave it disabled if the
  147. printing is routed through a network print queue, in which case the network
  148. will look after any printer problems.

  151. NETWORK SCREEN UPDATES IN THE BROWSE WINDOW
  152.  
  153. A good thing about networks and multiuser systems is that any additions or
  154. changes you make are available to all other users on the system. This ability
  155. does present new complications, one of which you need to be aware of.
  156.  
  157. Under the Inventory menu you will find the Browse command, which allows you to
  158. see your data in "table" view, i.e. you see a window with multiple records on a
  159. grid. Suppose that two users both open the Browse window at the same time. They
  160. are looking at the same data and the display order is controlled by the same
  161. indexes. If the first of these users adds or edits something then the
  162. information on the second user's screen is out of date. It will not be updated
  163. until the second users scrolls the table. This situation is aggravated if the
  164. first user changes the field on which the table is sorted (the item name or
  165. stock code) and the indexes are changed as a result. The second user's screen
  166. is now out of date in two ways i.e. display order and the data itself.

  168. Many multiuser programs lack Browse windows for this reason, but we believe
  169. they are too useful to leave out. You need only be aware of the problem and be
  170. patient if you see unexpected effects in the Browse window when there is more
  171. than one user making changes. To make the problem go away you can restrict
  172. yourself to working in "record" view, where you see only one record at a time.

  176.                             STARTING RETAIL PLUS
  177.  
  178. To start Retail Plus go to the directory where it is found and enter R56
  179. at the DOS prompt:
  180.                      CD\RETAIL              <press enter>
  181.                      R56                    <press enter>

  183. Explanation: The installation process creates a file called R56.BAT that
  184. contains the following two lines:
  185.  
  186.                                   SET CLIPPER=F:30
  187.                                   RETAIL56
  188.  
  189. Retail Plus should always be started up with this batch file, otherwise your
  190. system may not allow it to open enough files. If at some point in the program
  191. you press F1 for help, and instead of a help screen you get a DOS Error 4 (too
  192. many files open), then you know that you cannot open enough files. If this
  193. happens try typing SET at the DOS prompt. You should then see CLIPPER=F:30 on
  194. the screen along with the other DOS environment setups. If it is not there the
  195. program was not started up using R56.BAT. If the file R56.BAT is missing you
  196. can create it with any text editor such as the DOS Edit command.

  198. If you are already using Retail Plus and want to run this test using your
  199. existing data then copy the entire contents of yor current retail directory to
  200. a new directory and install the test version over it. Do not install the test
  201. program in the same directory as your live data. Please note that once you
  202. have used your inventory data with the beta test version you cannot copy it
  203. back to an older version.

  205. The program is initially configured to start without requiring a password. If it
  206. does prompt you for a password just type "TEST" and press ENTER. You can remove
  207. this password later and set up new ones if you need security. If this password
  208. does not give you access then someone has already set up the system for
  209. security.
